Staying Active During Rainy Season

Let’s face it, we all sometimes struggle with keeping active during the rainy season. I’ve definitely had days where I chose not to exercise because I didn’t feel like going outside (too soggy, too cold, too dark, too windy, not sunny enough, the list goes on! 😜). However, this shouldn’t be a reason to completely halt movement!
One of the common causes for overuse injury that we see at Upward PT is quick increases in training volume during the winter and summer months. Staying active during the shoulder season is one way to mitigate the risks of over training during the “on” seasons. Here is a short list of ideas to help keep your motivation high and keep your body moving this rainy season:

  1. Sign up for a race- Having a race at the end of or just after shoulder season is a good way to keep yourself accountable with movement. Many people find it easier to make and keep an exercise regimen if they have a goal that they are trying to achieve/train for.

  2. Find a club that meets regularly for physical activity- Finding a social club that meets weekly for exercise can be a great way to motivate you to get outside and move your body! There are many run clubs, bike clubs, climbing clubs, etc. that meet regularly that can be a fun way to build community and an extra motivator to get moving on those days that you need an extra push.

  3. Join your local gym- there are many ways to get in movement indoors that can be fun! Get creative with it- going to the gym doesn’t necessarily mean just lifting weights or sitting on a machine doing stationary cardio miles. Indoor climbing, swimming, racket sports, and ball sports can all be fun ways to mix up your activity in an indoor setting.

  4. Take a fitness class- Now is the perfect time to sign up for that class that you’ve been checking out or wondering about! Having a class to look forward to that happens on a recurring basis can be a fun way to fit movement into your weekly routine.

  5. Exercise with friends who can be “accountability buddies”- Find buddies who enjoy the same movement types as you and challenge each other to keep it up during the rainy times! It’s great to have a friend who can lean on you when they need extra motivation to get moving, and who you can lean on when you need it!

There you have it! Give these ideas a try and as always, feel free to email us with any questions!
